I am in need of an upgrade for my Radeon HD 4890. Its coupled with Phenom II X4 B55 (Unlocked from X2), Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 & 4 GB of generic DDR2 ram. I know a 5970 is overkill on this system but I'm hoping to upgrade the rest to a Phenom II 1100T X6 & Asus Crosshair V Formula soon afterwards. I also know I'm gonna need a good quality 750W psu for a 5970.

So my question is. How does the HD 5970 still fair out these days. People are saying that it can still compete with HD 6990. For this sort of cash, I'm looking at 2GB HD 6950 or a GTX 560TI 1280MB brand new. Are the newer cards the way to go just for the sake of being newer technology? The 5970 is a power house of a card that would probably out perform either 6950 of 560TI. Plus the card is a HD 5970. An iconic card that is the Bugatti Veyron of the PC world. Fast, big & beautiful. Half the reason I want the card so much.

I am reasonably new to computers when compared to some of you experts but I know a thing or two. This one though, I thought I'd need some help. Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Steve

After a long an sauded career with AMD i wouldn't recommend their top end cards.

For value for money, i buy mid range Radeon cards. if im going to drop £250 on a card though then i go Nvidia. They are better made and last longer in my experience. They just are simply to expensive when buying lower end cards.
