When i turn on my laptop it turns off

i have a compaq presario and when i turn it on it sometimes loads up windows and shuts down or it even shuts down without loading windows.

Could be overheating, could have power problems.

Next time, hit the appropriate key to enter setup and see if it shuts down on it's own that way too.

It could be a bad RAM stick. I have at least 2 cases of this before.

If you have two RAM sticks, try to remove 1 at a time & see if you can get it to work with only 1. If you only have 1 RAM stick, see if you can borrow from another laptop or a friend.

I have seen reboots with bad RAM, but not shutdowns. But then, laptops might be configured to do that I guess.

I used to have a Toshiba laptop with a similar problem. It would boot, run for a few minutes and then shut down. Overheating was the problem. Excessive dust will cause overheating. You may want to try blowing out the fan and the exhaust port (not sure if that is the right term) with some compressed air.

This is a classic sign the battery itself needs to be replaced. There are two differing voltage taps on your battery. One of them has failed.
Get a new battery. Problem solved.
