When you use RIMM, do you have to use it in pairs??

Only if you're using it in a dual-channel configuration (i.e. the i840 or the i850 chipset). With dual-channel configs, you have to populate each channel.

With single-channel configs like the i820, RDRAM can be installed one RIMM at a time, but RDRAM on the i820 is just pointless. The entire i820 chipset was a flop from the start--recalled twice, then performed like sh!t even in final production.

Thanks Kelledin
So with P4, do you have choice to config to singal channel
like through BIOS or you don't, have to use Rimm in pairs??

For the P4 on the i850 (currently the only P4 solution available), it must have RIMMs installed in pairs.

Rambus will probably remain a dual channel configuration for the remainder of its life span. The latency is too high on Rambus memory to use single channel. I imagine some cheaper chipsets will come along for the cheap computers to use single RIMMs. If you are upgrading to a P4 with Rambus now or anytime real soon, you are a fool, as even INTEL does not know where the market is going on memory standards, and if Rambus loses in court, INTEL will most likely abandon Rambus in a heart beat for PC133 and DDR266 memory standards and future DDR standards. Intel is willing to take chances because they have the money to do so, but they are not fools, and they know that everyone has been laughing at them for the last year and a half. Expect to see major changes from Intel by the end of 2001.
