About four weeks ago, I decided my laptop just wasn't cutting my gaming needs (RC and regular flight simulators) so, after a ten year hiatus from building, I decided it was time for another build. After ten years though, where to start? I called my guru buddy and he directed me to this site. After reading everything I could (time limitations) on the forums, I figured I had absorbed enough... here's where I'm at now
i5 2500k
Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z/Gen 3
8 Gb GSkill Ripjaws 1600
Mushkin 180 Gb SSD
Rosewill Challenger Case
Coolmax semi-modular 750W PSU
XFX DD Radeon 7950
This thing is a beast compared to my laptop (which was very good 3 years ago). I was showing 55fps max (mostly around 30fps or lower) on the laptop (lowest detail), I'm now showing 200-300+ fps with no signs of slowing and all detail maxed. Compared to my last build (PII), this one was very easy. With only two slight scares.
1) Never seen one sided ram clips before, I didn't seat the RAM properly, found that out in the POST - Love that motherboard debugging read-out
2) Couldn't get the machine to recognize the 7950 at first, I had to install the drivers manually (auto run said the card didn't exist and the system was showing a generic video card).
So, to all of you here, noob's for asking my questions for me and those knowledgeble folks who take the time to answer, Thanks.
Regular monitors refresh at 60 Hz . Thats 60 times per second or exactly the same as 60 fps .
No matter how many fps fraps is reporting, what is actually on the screen is 60 fps .
I'm sure it's a tad bit overkill but... it's actually running on a 46" led TV @ 120Hz so not toooo much. Hopefully, I won't be outdated next updates... seems to be about two a year and I wasn't doing too bad until the last ones... which is what lead to this beast.
