Hi! Welcome to the forums.

First, drop to the normal i3-2100. the xx20 just adds hD3000 onboard video which you won't need since you have the 6870.
-An i3-2100 is more than capable of playing battlefield 3. Don't worry about it.

Could you list the parts you're thinking about? Might help me figure out what you need.

You're missing the PSU, case, mobo, DVD drive and Hard drive.

Sorry about that. Yeah, an i3-2100 (or 2120) would be fine. I'd suggest an AMD build but let's go with intel for now.
-I personally would swap the case for this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811146075
-Save $1 and get a better looking DVD drive (no nasty white writing) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6827118067
-I'd trust G.Skill ram over Elite: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231422
-Get this XFX GPU, make sure to use the promo code: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814150521 Better GPU for same price.
-This mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813157233 Yeah it's $25 more but you get alot more features with it, mainly USB3 and Sata3.

That's all! Hope I didn't push it outta your price range :/ Go for the i3-2120, for sure.

Page 13, CPU scaling. I3 and I7, makes no difference, It's all about the video in BF3

To answer your question, an aftermarket cpu cooler is not necessary with a 2100. For $5...
