Forum Systems : New Build Athlon X4 631 good CPU for budget gaming system?

Word :    Username :

Hey everyone, my friend needs me to build him a gaming pc for around 600 - 650, Ive chosen either an Athlon X3 455 or an Athlon X4 631. The X3 is 3.3ghz and socket AM3 while the X4 is socket FM1 but 2.6ghz. Which would be the better cpu for gaming? Ill post links for the other parts.

Case: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produ [...] 6811147023

MoBo: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produ [...] 6813138333 - if i choose the 631

Ram : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produ [...] 6820104203

Video Card: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produ [...] 6814103197

HDD: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produ [...] 6822136770

PSU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produ [...] 6817341017

All comes to $641.11 Canadian.

Nope, neither. The Athlon 631 is really a gimped A8, meaning it doesn't have the processing power of a full processor, per say. You'll want something on the AM3 socket for that.

Second, shop around at a few different sites, like NCIX.ca and Canadacomputers.com They offer free shipping, as newegg's can be crazy high in Canada.
Last, please post the form here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] ild-advice gives us a better idea of what you need.

Cheers!

Well any cpu higher would bring me out of the 650 dollar limit

It's not a matter of higher CPU, it's matter of different CPU. We'll figure something out, $650 is pretty roomy.

True, the i3-2100 is obviously the better choice but since 650 is the limit amd seems to be the better choice, it's mostly for playing WoW, LoL and cod4

I like the X3 becuase it's a higher stock frequency and also has the ability to have a fourth core unlocked, which I am or may not get lucky with, but it is still overclockable

^pretty damn good build. Missing a DVD drive and the mobo is feature stripped. Other than that, it kicks major ass.

Yea that's a solid build but the final price comes to 745 dollars, over the price limit which is why I chose AMD

You could knock almost $100 off that build by going with a 6850 for the GPU.

That is true, I'll try to bump down the price, I've never heard of direct canada and they've got some good prices

You could even go with a 6770 for the games you are playing and save a little more.

That was my initial choice of video card as almost anything higher goes over my limit. Maybe the 7000 series card will decrease the 6000 series prices a bit

Okay so I've done a bit more looking around and I've made the final price come down to $648.37
