Any Canon PowerShot Pro1 users care to talk about their experiences.
I'm thinking about moving to this camera from a S60 and I'm interested
about the effects of digital noise at higher ISO's and in general low
light performance.

Roger

The Pro one comes out of the box (usually) needing a firmware update. (as
recently as 2 weeks ago. The firmware update fixes a VERY LONG delay in the
auto-focus, and makes the auto-focus work much better.

The low light performance is poor, and noise is high even at ISO 100.

In bright light the camera takes beautiful photos at ISO 50, but in low light
it doesn't focus well (if at all) and the ISO performance is horrible above
ISO 50.

I had one for a week. I returned it.

Too bad.....
The two points you are basing your purchase on are the two weakest
'features' of this camera.
That and a relatively long time to autofocus. It definitely is not a sports
camera.
Otherwise, the Pro 1 is an incredible camera. The lens is extremely sharp,
and results at the higest resolution/lowest ISO (50) can be stunning.
The Pro 1 struggles in low-light situations. It needs a fair amount of light
for the autofocus system to function well.
Some users also complain about the motorized zoom - as opposed to direct
manual zoom. It can be sluggish if you're in a hurry.
If you're looking for sample photos from this camera, the few that are on
the canon website are a true indication of what to expect.
I've used mine extensively for travel and portrait photography. It is a
pleasure to carry around, not being too bulky, and no extra lenses to worry
about. The supplied battery lasts forever
The pop-up flash is - well just a pop up flash. Good for not much. You
can't use the lens hood with the flash. There is not enough height to avoid
the rather large shadow caused by the lens hood being in the direct line of
fire.
You can google and find more negative opinions and thoughts, but I just love
my Pro 1

I.M.

Ian, thanks for the comments. From other research, I was beginning to
come to this conclusion. I travel a lot on business and my prime times
for photographing during those trips is very early in the morning or
late at night (e.g. 10:00pm local time). Also dawn/dusk walks with
colleagues - thus the emphasis on low light, etc. Street photography in
the off hours. It hasn't been easy to find compact cameras that can
really excel in this department. I use mainly film for this stuff and
digital for the other. But I don't want to spend more money on another
camera if it won't work effectively in both arenas - too many already
:-).

Regards,
Roger

So far, I haven't found the firmware upgrade on Canon's US site yet. The
comments are listed to be fixed, but the DL shows 0 bytes, as if the DL
isn't available. Otherwise I think the Pro 1 is a fine tool.

You need to go to a special page (there is a link at Dpreview among other
places) and plug in a serial number.

If the serial is from a camera that left the factory without the update, you
will be able to dl the update.
