Driver crashing with marginally better card (Radeon 6790)

Hi everyone,

I've got a bit of a problem that I really can't put my finger on. I have a AMD Radeon HD 6770 (OEM) and won an XFX Radeon HD 6790 in a draw. With the 6790 I noticed I get crashes at somewhat random times. I've had WoW crash on instance zone-outs, Skyrim during loading screens, and the only consistent place, on the research panel in the laboratory in SC2 (picture-in-picture of upgrades, etc).

I initially thought it was a power supply issue, as I noticed afterwards that I had a 460 PSU and the 6790 requires a 500W one. So, I bought a 700W, installed it, but the problem persists. In all cases so far the driver reloads after a black screen for a couple of seconds and games pick up where they left off, but this obviously should not be happening. The issue has never occurred with the 6770.

Faulty card? A setting I should adjust? Or go back to the 6770 that was working fine?

Thanks for any insight.

I would suspect a faulty card based on the 6770 working fine!
  2. It's the only logical explanation I can come up with as well... fingers crossed I can get a replacement for a card I got for free! :-P
  3. Should register it and explain how you won it!
  4. Yeah, already done and submitted a ticket via XFX's support page. Either way, if I end up changing cards a few months (or more) down the line, I've now got a power supply that will be able to handle it so it's not a total waste on that front. The PSU that came with my PC was just enough for the 6770 anyway.

  5. What size PSU!
  6. Old one a Dell stock 460W, new one OCZ ModXStream-Pro 700W
  7. The dell stock 460 is actually better than many generic 500-550 and the OCZ 700 is plenty!
  8. That was my reasoning :-)

    Thanks again for the input.
