If this is for gaming only we could do way better for that budget, if you could fill out the 'new build advice' form at the top of the forum I'll see what I can do.

OK firstly, it really makes no sense to go with AMD at this budget, the CPU you have chosen performs on par with the i3-2100 at stock (in games). I would certainly go with the i5-2500k, it massively outperforms anything from AMD in games. It overclocks very well too.

Also I wouldn't bother with SLI/Crossfire when playing on a single monitor, you will run into unnecessary problems with heat, noise and compatibility. It's best to go with a good single card for single monitor gaming in my opinion.

With the RAM, as far as I know no game will use more than 4GB so 8GB really is more than enough.

You would get much better performance out of something like this:

Intel Core i5-2500k
8GB Mushkin Silverline
ASRock Z68 Extreme3
Sapphire HD 7970 3GB
Samsung 830 128GB
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB
XFX Core 550W
Coolermaster HAF 932
Noctua NH-D14
Samsung DVD Burner

Total: $1657.90 on Newegg

I realise that you specified ASUS/EVGA/AMD etc. but I would really urge you to research the parts I mentioned. You would get much better performance.

Shouldn't you go with like a 700 watt psu? 550 seems a little low?

I agree, you should go with a higher PSU (prolly 650 or more).

A Hyper 212 Evo could handle overclocking up to probably 4.5 ghz; if you plan on going over, then go with an MH-D14 (or look into closed loop water cooling ;D)

Also consider a ROG MAximus IV Gene-Z/ Gen 3

Great Reliability and performance, and considered one of the best boards out there right now.

Another thing is that for a single monitor, a 7970 could be considered overkill, but if your budget allows it, go for it!

550W is fine for that build, go with the 650W version of that PSU if you'd prefer though.
