Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards Upgrading from Radeon HD 4870 512MB

Hi -

I'm interested in trying to extend the life of my current system for a while with a graphic card upgrade, particularly one that gets me up to 1GB from my current 512MB. I have been very satisfied with my Radeon and would definitely consider another ATI card. Also, I use a fairly modest 1680x1050 HD monitor (at least modest in comparison to most of my gaming friends). My primary interest is running the newest mmos and graphic intense games such as Skyrim:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 Dual-Core 3.33 Ghz
Asus P5K EPU
500W PSU
8GB DDR2 800Mhz SDRAM
Vista Home Premium 64 Bit

Thanks for the feedback and let me know if I left out any essential information.

560 ti sounds like a good place to start or a 6950 1GB.
These can be found for around 250

Since you said that you would like to stay with Radeon cards I have picked out a two that should work very well.

Higher End Card: AMD Radeon 6950 2GB GDDR5 Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814129171

Lower End Card, but still an awesome card: AMD Radeon 6850 1GB GDDR5 Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814102908

I would also HIGHLY RECCOMEND that you upgrade your Power Supply if you can swing it. Although it says it only needs 500W Power Supply I would upgrade just to be on the safe side and keep my system even more future proof. An 800W would do just fine.

Agreed unless the PSU is a good brand and newer than 2 years
