Hello,i have an acer 5740 running 1st gen i3-330m, 6 gig ram is it possible to upgrade to a higher spec i3 without upgrading anything else

I believe you can. Just make sure the CPU is 32nm & the TDP is 35W, same as the i3 330m.
You can't upgrade to a 45nm Proc.
So you can upgrade without changing anything else, But it has to be supported by your BIOS.
Check the CPU's support list of your laptop model.
