They are both amazing. They both have pros and cons. Also cards trade blows with their competition at least in the 500/6000 series. Everything is on par with each other.

That said, AMD is usually a little bit cheaper. AMD has Eyefinity. Nvidia has surround 3d, CUDA, and Physx. So those are really the things you should be thinking about when you are deciding between each one.

+1 as far as gaming goes.

The most expensive card(s) you can afford will allow you to move forward for the longest amount of time.

they both are good brand's but i give +1 for nvidia because it have no problem with thier drivers SLI works perfectly and scaling are good too while ATI is not behind it's also give a similar performance of nvidia but unfortunately they have a little bad drivers particularly when using CROSSFIRE like microstrutting. otherwise both are good..

Yes your best option is HD 6670, no need to buy more ram, you need a new whole system to play the latest games at high resolution with great performance, you're CPU is kinda lagging.

The GFX card doesn't need a PCIE power connector, so your current PSU will work without any problem, Also if you want a PSU with PCIE power connectors then pick a true quality branded 500W PSU such as Antec or Cooler Master. Raidmax is a cheap nasty one.

both companies are at their best when comes in choosing graphics card.
generally amd( ati radeon) cards consumes less idle and load power than nvidia cards. nvidia cards perform better when antialiasing is turned on compared to amd cards n also consumes more power than amd cards.(talking about latest dx11 gaming with aa maxed on battlefield 3 others not so much...i guess).
to sum up,both cards will run perfectly fine unless u think about overclocking very much higher than stock speeds that any card runs in.

I tend to go with AMD (ATI) since they generally have good price/performance/power consumption ratios. I never had any serious driver issues with their cards.

I also bought nVidia cards in the past, but it seems I buy AMD cards most of the time.

I currently have a Radeon HD 5850 in my gaming rig and a GeForce 9600 GT in my HTPC.

does your motherboard support pcie 2.0?
if you want to play games at high res and no lag, you will have to increase your budget to accomodate a new pc and a new, higher res. monitor.

Without going into deep details simple Not all games depends on the GPU, and your CPU with the 1 MB L2 cache is very weak enough not to render images and textures in such high end games.

Crysis 2 and Dirt 3 Won't run in your system. You might try considering a whole system upgrade.

iirc phenom ii 840 doesn't have L3 cache as it is a rebranded athlon ii x4. if L3 cache is important to you, you could try to get a ph ii 955 be/965t be. get a good cpu cooler for the cpu.
an am3+ with 970/990x/990fx chipset motherboard will serve you for a while.

x4 840 is not as good as 955 BE. 955 BE is a fast processor and overclock well just for I think 6500-7000 Rupees. More Worth than 840.

Keep the processor, x4 955: Overclocks well and Outperform i3 2100 in non gaming (Like Video editing stuff) I think. Non gaming falls behind i3 2100 but I think it will catch up and trade blows when overclocked. Note that i3 2100 overclocks very little I think I saw them only OC maximum to be increased to 100Mhz. So it is very low.

Motherboard suggestion: Get the Gigabyte (take the 870 chipset with it, it's good you might choose the one with USB3 Also). Or you may look at 970-D3 for more money and piledriver might be compatible motherboard.

I generally use ATI cards below the $200 price point
I generally use nVidia cards above the $200 price point

Guru3D uses the following games in their test suite, COD-MW, Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, Far Cry 2, Metro 2033, Dawn of Discovery, Crysis Warhead. Total fps (summing fps in each game @ 1920 x 1200) for the various options in parenthesis (single card / SL or CF) are tabulated below along with their cost in dollars per frame single card - CF or SLI:

$ 155.00 460-768 MB (314/592) $ 0.49 - $ 0.52
$ 155.00 6850 (371/634) $ 0.42 - $ 0.49
$ 170.00 6870 (434/701) $ 0.39 - $ 0.49
$ 220.00 6950 (479/751) $ 0.46 - $ 0.59
$ 260.00 6950 Frozr OC (484/759) $ 0.54 - $ 0.69
$ 205.00 560 Ti (455/792) $ 0.45 - $ 0.52
$ 320.00 6970 (526/825) $ 0.61 - $ 0.78
$ 215.00 560 Ti - 900 Mhz (495/862) $ 0.43 - $ 0.50
$ 340.00 570 (524/873) $ 0.65 - $ 0.78
$ 500.00 580 (616/953) $ 0.81 - $ 1.05

Using the cost per frame as a barometer, you can see why the bolded cards are the two I most commonly use.

All things being equal, a rare occurrence, I gotta give and to nVidia for the PhysX thing. As THG said in their review, it's not a thing you'll miss if ya haven't done it, but once used, it's not like ya gonna turn it off. Finally, if can use CUDA for any of ya apps (i.e. video editing), then that's a big reason to "go green" w/nVidia
