Need to upgrade CPU:

My wife wants to play Diablo III and her laptop will not do it. I was given a 2009 Emachine EL1331G and figured i would upgrade the CPU, Memory, and Video.

I have upgraded the video from on-board Nvidia 6150se to a HD6570 Low profile for $30 on Newegg. I upped the RAM from 2GB DDR2-800 to 3GB DDR2-800. I am running 32bit Win 7 Pro.

Now for the problem. The CPU installed is an AMD Athlon AM2 (940) 2850e (22 watts). I can not find anyone that has this series of desktops and upgraded the CPU. All I could get out of Emachine was this Motherboard supports 45 watt TDP max CPUs.

Any help would be greatly appriciated. Money is tight but I have about $50 to spend on a Core.

Don't waste your money trying to upgrade the piece of junk. Someone gave it to you for a reason, cause it's not upgradable.

Your wife want's to play Diablo III? LOL

Not many options for 45watt tdp CPU try ebay though!

I just want to throw it out there now that it is going to be hard to achieve the goal with the resources you can commit to achieving it.

The specifications page for the game says you need at least 2 cores and they need to be faster than 1.8 GHZ each. Such processors may desire more than 45w TDP.

That will limit you to pretty much these processors (all of them Athlon 2s)
x2 235e
x2 240e
x3 400e
x3 405e
x4 600e
x4 605e

I would lean towards the x3s and x4s if I were you so that regular windows operation can be offloaded to non-game cores by the OS while she is playing.

These processors are really old and probably not still sold through retail channels. You may have to resort to places like ebay or craigslist to try to get one.

They absolutely must be those with E's on them because anything else will break 45w TDP.

Raiddinn - Thanks for the info.

I am looking at the 4450e, 4850e, and the 5050e. I can get the 4450e for $20. That core isn't the fastest but at 2.3ghz dual core it should be more powerful than the base intel 820 dual core.

I would rather see you get one of the Athlon 2s rather than the Athlon 1s.

The x3 400e or x3 405e would run the game a whole lot better than the 4450e would.

The Passmark benchmark scores for the CPUs are
400e = 2014
405e = 1984
4450e = 1195

That pretty much makes the Athlon 2 x3s twice as good as the 4450e. The price will be a good bit more also, but I think the gain in processing power would be worth it.

OK, I didn't think I could use AM3 chips. That chip is only 938 pin will that not be a problem? The price is a little high at $95. Where are you getting the Passmark bench scores?

My gaming machine is Intel. I haven't used AMD since 939 and DDR 400mhz RAM, sorry.

Without finding proof of the machine supporting AM3 chip I would not do it.

The AM3 processors are backwards compatible with AM2 and AM2+ motherboards as long as those motherboards have the necessary BIOS updates.

Generally speaking, that will mean the BIOS update has to be dated later than AM3 was created.

If you believe Wikis, here is one saying the same thing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_AM2

Per it:

Socket AM3 processors are able to run on Socket AM2 and AM2+ motherboards with appropriate bios updates, but not vice-versa. AM3 processors have a new memory controller supporting both DDR2 and DDR3 SDRAM, allowing backwards compatibility with AM2 and AM2+ motherboards. Since AM2 and AM2+ processors lack the new memory controller, they will not work on AM3 motherboards.

The number of pins shouldn't cause a major problem, but you are welcome to consult with anyone else you trust to answer your computer hardware problems to verify that if you like.

Problem is that it is unlikely that emachine has a BIOS update! Not nearly all AM2 or AM2+ boards have AM3 CPU support! I even have a Gigabyte 770 board that does not!

Thank you this helped a lot.

My wife doesn't want to come down to the basement and use my mahcine to play Diablo 3 and seeing as Blizzard did a way with eye-finity support it looks stupid on my rig. 3x 20 inch LG monitors at 4800x1200.

I know the 4450e sucks compaired to the 400e but I can handle loosing $20 not $95 if it doesn't work. I will keep you all posted on this thread how the rig does. I should have the 4450e buy Thursday or Friday.

MY Wife's Rig:

AMD Athlon dual core 4450e
3GB DDR2-800mhz RAM
320GB Hard Drive
MSI HD6570 1GB Video Card
MS 8000 bluetooth Keyboard Mouse
50 inch LG PLazma @ 720p 600hz.

My Rig:

INtel i5 2500k (4.3ghz)
Biostar P67 Extreme MB
16GB DDR3 1600mhz
Corsair 90GB SATA3 SSD
3x 1TB Samsung HD (RAID 5)
MSI 6850 Video card
Kingwinn 1000 watt Powersupply.
3x 20inch LG standard MOnitors (4800x1200)

The 4450e is actually a substantial upgrade dual core and 0.5GHz faster!

Well the CPU finally arrived and it worked with no issue. I was a little disappointed with the Win 7 score of 4.9 on the CPU test but it is def. better than the 3.6 I got from the single core. With This info I am 99% sure the 4850e and the 5050e would also work. the only worry I have now is the cooler provided buy this eMachine is really bad. I have never seen a cooler with so little Aluminum and no copper. I guess it works great on a 22 watt single core but I will have to see what happens with this 45 watt core.

Thanks everyone with your help.

If you have to get a new cooler, the Hyper 212 is a good one and it fits most boards. If it fits what you have then I would absolutely not spend more money than that costs.
