Hello, I'm getting my friends old computer next week for free. Problem is it's over 5 years old and the hardware seems a bit outdated. Specs are:
- Intel core 2 quad q6600 2.4GHz
- 2GB DDR2 RAM at 400MHz
- Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT
- 650W PSU
- Gigabyte P35 DQ6 Motherboard
- 500GB HDD
So any advice on what to upgrade first, I only have around £100 to spend at the moment. Also hoping to use this for moderate gaming etc. :)
Thanks in advance! :)

Upgrade the GPU to a Nvidia GT440 (or you can go higher in price & performance to a GTS 250) or so & memory to 4GB first, as the CPU still good, just needs a clock speed boost, and as it looks, the PSU, HDD, & Motherboard is still strong enough to handle really any gaming or tasks.

I would recommend to upgrade the graphic card first. PSU is more than enough with its 650w.
you can easily overclock the q6600 to 3ghz or more. (i had my q6600 running on 3ghz stable)
