8 pin vs 4 pin vs 4+4 pin

quick question,

what is the differnce between 4 pin, 4+4 pin and 8 pin psu cpu connector. my mobo has a 4 pin. does that mean if i bought a 4+4 pin cpu connector on my psu it will have two 4 pin connectors and i only connect the one i need?

If you only have one 4 pin CPU connector on the mobo, only one of the 4+4 will work. They're "keyed" differently, so you can't screw it up.

The extra 4 pin just provides extra power for OC purposes (usually).

Yes. You only need to connect 1. It is sufficient to power your motherboard. Even if motherboard with 8 PIN PSU connector will work with only just 1 4PIN connected in case your PSU only have 1 4PIN.
