The Canon S2 has just been released in Ontario. We're getting one and we
need to buy a memory card for it - a 512 or 1GB.
It's our first digital camera and I'm not sure about the camera processing
speed and the card speed correlation. I dont want to buy a card so fast the
camera cant take advantage of it but I want it as fast as possible
(read/write). The Sandisk range includesExtreme, Extreme III, Ultra, Ultra
II. Can anyone advise or provide clarity ?
thanks

The Extremes are a waste of money. Its biggest claim to
fame is that many have gone belly up within a year.
We recently moved from Ultra to Ultra II in our S1, and
have seen improvements in writing speed for film clips
and elsewhere. How this will translate to the S2 (which
has built-in USB 2.0 unlike the S1) remains to be seen,
but it's a pretty safe bet it will also benefit in one way or
another from Ultra II (and now Ultra III) speeds. Any
function that uses more memory than the S1 or S2 can
buffer will benefit from faster memory.

There is also the advantage one gets from faster transfers to the
computer via a card reader, which can be substantial with 1GB cards.

The S2 has onboard USB2.0, so a card reader isn't required
to get the faster speeds. On the S1 and a 2.0 reader we get
a little over 10MB/s with Ultra II. I'm sure the Ultra III will
be even faster.

Thanks for this.
Why is the Extreme range of SD cards a waste of money ?
Typically what/which functions use more memory than the camera can buffer ?

I believe the main thing they offer over Ultra II is an enhanced operating
temperature range. Only if you need that extended range are the cards
worth getting. Personally, I use and recommend Kingmax Platinum.
