Hey Guys,

I am currently running with a 5870 2gb card. I want to go back to nvidia with a GTX 580.

My system specs are,

Core i7 930
Gigabyte X58 UD3R mobo (revision 1)
6 GB of OCZ triple channel DDR 3 RAM
800w BFG PSU

I have done some digging regarding my PSU and have been told it will be fine as I am not into overclocking do not have the technical know how or the balls to try LOL. I just wanted to know if there would be a big difference in performance with the 580? Or would I be better keeping my money as something else is on the horizon?

Cheers.

Yep, that's a big step up. The equivalent to your 5870 is the Geforce GTX 560 (non-Ti, non-448 core edition). With a GTX 580 you’re looking at performance roughly 1.5x that of your current card.
So, with that said, how unsatisfied are you with your 5870? Unless you’re gaming on Ultra High settings at resolutions higher than 1080 or plan on using multiple monitors for gaming you probably won’t really notice a ton of difference. The 5870 is still a great card for casual gaming at decent frame rates, where the GTX 580 is just an absolute powerhouse for super serious gamers. If you need 100+ fps at all times go for it, if not wait until you’re no longer happy with your card.

Thanks for all your input!! Is there EVER an easy time to justify upgrading your current GPU if it is still playing games OK LOL!? I can't deny my card is doing quite nicely but I have had it almost 2 years now, and feel like going back to nvidia and having a new card at the same time!!
