Creative CD-RW problem in W2k

I have this problem that is really really annoying me. First, some info:

Win2k
500 MHz Athlon on K7M mobo
Plenty of free RAM and HD space
Creative 8x CR-RW (RW8438E)
Nero 5.0.44

My problem is this: music CD's refuse to burn! When I get to the 'burn' window, the program does its scanning and caching, etc. Then when it gets to the Testing phase, it gives me this-- " SCSI/ATAPI command timeout error "
I found nothing in Nero's website about this error, nor Creative's. There are no new drivers from Creative for this drive, so I'm using the ones that were installed the first time.
If anyone has encountered this problem and knows a way around it, please PLEASE let me know.
