Black screen at startup?

Hey,
When i turn my computer on and log on i get a black screen but i still have control of the mouse and i can open task manager with ctrl+shift+escape but that's about it, so whenever i log on i have to open tskmgr and end "explorer.exe" process then create a new task "explorer.exe". anyone know how to fix this? it's incredibly annoying.

Are things looking more normal when you boot up in Safe Mode?
Turn power on, tap on the F8 key till you see the Advanced Boot Menu, choose Safe Mode.
