Is it SATA?
If not, you might have to fiddle with the jumper settings.
You can normally find this info on the hard drive itself, or you could visit the manufacturer's website.

Is there an OS installed already on that drive? At what point after the initial POST does it give you the error message?
Make sure the HDD has good power connection as well as data connection to the mobo.
You will need to set the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device in BIOS, then load the OS DVD in it and proceed with the installation.

Is the old HDD still workin? If it is still working, you might just want to clone it to the new HDD using a cloning software available online for free download.
