What motherboard do you have?
That CPU can be overclocked if you have a motherboard that allows it

If your motherboard supports overclocking, 3.5 GHz should be an easy jump for a Regor. Remember to increase in small increments and closely monitor your heat while you OC, and test with an application such as Prime95 to make sure your PC is stable under load. Happy Overclocking!

The ASRock n68-s3 does indeed support overclocking. I would suggest overclocking from the bios as I have had some problems with the OC Tuner program.

Almost any current GPU can push 1280x1024 with all the bells and whistles very easily. How much do you want to spend? It will be very easy in your case to spend too much, since you aren't trying to push 1900x1200 or something.

The 550 Ti should be enough for 1280x1024. I'll say this though: I use the same resolution and have an Asus 560 OC non-Ti (OC'd to 950/1900/2100 from a stock 850/1700/2100), and there's literally nothing I can't max out and keep playable frame rates (over 30 FPS Avg.).

Some of that may be able to be attributed to my 2500K and it being OC'd to 4.5Ghz because 1280x1024 is usually more CPU bound, but I think you'll be OK with a 550 Ti with that CPU. A 560 Ti would be at the top end of what you would NEED, I think.

I would also suggest this though. If you ever plan on a higher res monitor, definitely get the 560 Ti.

No doubt the 560Ti is a better card but at 1280x1024 resolution it is a little bit of an overkill. On 1080P it is a great card.

GPU Manufacturers power requirements are based on total system load so when a card says it needs 500watts they are already taking all the other components in your system into account! The cards you are looking at consume less than 200watts themselves. Your system will hardly brake 400watts.

As for the PSU I just bout a corsair cx600 low end PSU and it is loads better than my old semi modular 580 watt Mushkin (supposedly high output) and I paid $54 for the corsair

For a 560 (ti) you could use a corsair cx500

specs are good enough i'd still recommend gtx 560ti and you want GTA4,BF3,dukenukem etc... whereas gta4 is highly cpu intensive game and bf3 is gpu intensive.
so you'd be good with gtx560ti..
