Phenom II x4 or Phenom II x6?

I am looking to upgrade my processor (AMD Phenom x3 8400). I have been looking at two processor the AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition, and the AMD Phenom II x6 1045T. I plan on using it for gaming with 2gb DDR2 ram and a GIGABYTE GeForce 550 ti OC video card, and I want to get a rather high frame rate on high and ultra setting. I was wondering, which processor would be better? Now I'm rather new to computer hardware and such, and I was conflicted because, the one has a higher clock (3.4 Ghz) and an unlocked multiplier, but the other has more cores and is cheaper. Which one would be better for what I want?

Thank you,
Alexander

  1. The faster X4 is going to do better in gaming, just make sure your motherboard supports it!
  2. Which motherboard do you have?
  3. I have an ASUS M2N68-AM PLUS motherboard.
  4. It will support the 1045T but not the 965! http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2Plus/M2N68AM_PLUS/#CPUS
because of the 95watt tdp limit.
  5. Oh that's a shame. thanks a ton for the help!
  6. The 1045T is a good upgrade from your X3!
  7. you need at least 4gbs of ram(really 8gbs) 8gbs is only $40
  8. Why not go with the Phenom II X4 955 95W?
