I think I'd go for the i7-2600k for this build. Since the budget is so high I'd probably get 16GB of RAM too. You might not utilise the full 16GB but RAM is cheap.

Intel Core i7-2600k
16GB Corsair XMS3 (4x4GB)
GIGABYTE GA-Z68MX-UD2H-B3
ASUS GT520-1GD3-CSM GeForce GT 520 (Fermi)
SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC128D/AM 2.5" 128GB
Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM
LIAN LI PC-A04B
SeaSonic S12II 380B 380W
LITE-ON Black 12X Blu-ray Burner
Scythe SCBSK-2100

$1239.90 Total

That would be a powerhouse for this kind of usage, also comes in a nice quiet little mATX box with fantastic cooling. Also has front panel USB 3.0 (motherboard has the internal connector too), SATA 3, a bluray burner and decent graphics. I can't think of anything else...

I can't think of anything else you could possibly want or need for this kind of build.

You do have the budget to go for a 6 core socket 2011 build but I don't think it's worth the extra cash personally, I'd sooner spend it on a nice monitor.

That would look absolutely gorgeous and the 2560x1440 resolution gives loads of space to work with.
