Hey folks.

I have a new XFX 6870 2GB card.
I also have a 450W power supply from XFX.
Here's a link with the PSU specs: http://xfxforce.com/en-us/Products/PSU/Pro-Series/450W-PSU.aspx

What I do not need to know is whether or not the 450 will supply enough juice to my system to run the GPU.
What I do need to know has to do with physically connecting the PSU to the GPU.

My 6870 has two 6-pin PCIE slots. My power supply only offers one 6+2, but advertises that the GPU/CPU rails can deliver 200w maximum. Is that correct? I imagine the two 6-pin slots on the GPU would be for two individual 75w PCIE connectors, no?

I'm curious if connecting the one 6+2 to the GPU, if it is indeed capable of delivering up to 200w, would suffice to power it. If not, why? Are the two power inputs on the 6870 routed to different functions on the GPU or are they just there so that people with the traditional two 75w rails can get it up and running?

Like I said, I'm not worried about the 450 powering my system. I've got that taken care of. ;)

Thanks, dudes and dudettes.

You will be fine with that power supply as long as you use a 1 6pin to 2 6pin converter and your not powering more than one hard drive + one dvd drive and alot of accessories more than 2 usb powered devices.

That power supply has 34 amps on the 12v rail so your good to use it. The wattage of a 6870 is less than a 5870 which ive powered for 2 years on a 450w power supply. 34 amps is also plenty to power the CPU as well as long as your not doing extreme overclocking you will be fine. If you want more information on the load of the CPU/GPU on the computer try this power supply calculator to give you a rough image of what your dealing with:

This article shows how much power on load you would need so 450 with 34 amps is plenty of power.
