My laptop detects external monitor but it wont show on external monitor screen

Hello,
I use a compaq Presario cq61, I connected an external monitor to my laptop but it doesnt show there, if I go to the video properties it actually detects the monitor is being pluged but it wont show. what do you think is the problem and what can I do about it.

should work fine...
did you set any sort of configuration for it?
if you didnt or dont know what im talking about
then right click anywhere on your desktop and (depends on your os which you didnt specify but ill assume its vista or 7) select screen resolution and it should display both monitors
now there should be a category which says "Multiple displays:"
there select to extend display, duplicate display, show desktop on first or second monitor...
