Accessing Server from Outside LAN

Hi. I am wanting to connect to my server remotely but don't really know how to go about doing this. I tried the port forwarding method but to no success.

It is probably a factor that I am in university accomodation connected to their internet which is obviously shared throughout the student halls of residence since I am able to see other computers when I wire my computer into the network directly (not via my router.)

Is there any way for me to do this as I have a file server and a web server I would like to access via the internet.

Does this have to be installed on my server? And my server is Ubuntu Linux.
