Purchased new tower old monitor no signal

i just purchased a new tower and will use my old monitor (about 4 years old). had to purchase adapter from dvi-d dual port to vga. had someone transfer all files over to new tower and now the monitor will not come on. shows message "no signal". help please

If you are to plug the monitor in when the pc has booted do you hear the found new hardware sound play?

Obvious but still needs to be asked, have you tried it in the other DVI socket?

Are you able to test the monitor on your old machine?
do you have another monitor to test on the current machine?
either one of these will give you the answer and therefore let you/us know where the problem lies and how to diagnose.
