I want to see how the war pans out between Nvidia and AMD on price and performance, so I am considering the low end card, the HD 7750 ($109) until the smoke clears between the two companies, then I'll bust out the $500+ by then.

HD 7750 is the newest technology (28 nm), has low power consumption and takes advantage of the PCIe 3.0 slots. Will play games crappy but it's only a temp card. Anyone has another suggestion for a temporary GPU to play today's hottest games on medium settings?

The resolution on my monitor is 1080p.

5770/6770 > 7750. They use a little more power, but they are better than the 7750. They may not OC as well, either. They're in the same price range as well. The 7750 is ~60 watts(ish) and the 5770 is ~100 watts. The latter will require some sort of connector from your PSU.

Dude, look for a rebate or go on eBay and pick up a 6850. For about $120 bucks you can literally max out just about any game at 1080p.

My buddy has one and he plays BF3 on Ultra and his fps are comfortable enough for him (I think he may dip down to lowest of about 22-23fps in worse case, but he's prob getting 30fps avg, which for that game on MAX is pretty darn good)

Then yeah, hold off until they stop swinging... but that may NEVER happen, so good luck with that.

I'm looking to two 7970 or a 7990; I'm just wondering what the price will be like by the time Nvidia comes out with its high end Next-Gen Kepler Q4.

May be rumors, but "As the leaked chart shown, die size of GK110 is 550mm², which is not only bigger than 365mm² of Radeon HD 7970, but also 30mm² larger than its GF110. It’s said that GK110-based GeForce GTX 680 will be up to 45% faster than AMD Radeon HD 7970." -guru3d.com
