USB not recognised in Laptop but works in Tower

Hey all,

I am looking to see if anyone can help me.

When I plug in my 8 GB PNY Metal-CPC719N USB drive on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5735Z) I get the "USB Device not recognised" problem.

When I check device management to see whether it is an assignment issue, it is not in the list and regardless of the slot it is placed in, I receive the same message.

However, when I plug it into my tower (Custom built) I do not receive this message and it loads instantaneously. For the record, both are running Windows 7 Ultimate, wih he laptop in 32-Bit and my Tower in 64-Bit.

Any advice on this is greatly appreciated,

Many Thanks,

Glenn

  1. Make sure your chipset driver is up to date. http://support.acer.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=557

Can you back up your information on the drive and try reformatting it then test again. Do you have other USB drives that work on the laptop?
  2. Hi :)

Forget reformatting at this stage..do some basic troubleshooting..

Plug in ANY other USB device (mouse or anything else) to the laptop...if all other devices work then there is NOTHING wrong with your laptop..... its the Usb stick thats faulty...

I have seen this before, as some Usb sticks are VERY voltage sensitive and can often work in one machine but not another...

    All the best Brett :)
  3. Try this it sometimes works:Shut off your computer using the shut down , then unplug it from your wall outlet. Let it sit for few minutes and then plug it back in and boot up your computer and try it again.
