Bandwidth required for remote desktop

It's not something I've measured, but your typical broadband connection is more than capable of handling most of your desktop applications over RDP (or VNC, LogMeIn, etc.). The efficiency of remote desktop solutions is directly related to how often screen updates occur, which might be not at all during periods of inactivity, up to the entire screen for video or online gaming. So don’t expect to play WOW or BF2 over RDP. But for your typical office applications, it shouldn't be a problem.

If you still want something official…

Again, this assumes the remote desktop is not undergoing full, constant updates, but using more typical office applications.

Over a WAN connection full screen updates will be noticeably lagged, but a typical 1-3mbit connection will provide adequate results. You won't be able to operate the computer as fast as if you were sitting at it, and typing a term paper won't be the best experience ever, but it is possible.

Typically the RDP is used to help other people with their computers, or to grab a file you didn't save to your thumb drive before you left the house.
