Planning my future budget pc build

I would play Skyrim and BF3 (6770) 720p

Not sure about motherboard for both

AMD Phenom II X4 970 is $110 (OEM so i will get cooler)
i3 2100 is $120

$15 difference

Not sure what im missing since or if i should ask here this is my first time asking under CPU's :heink:

More about : phenom 970 2100

Hi :)

You could always go for an AMD 1100T BE... the most powerful Phenom (6 core)

Hard to find but worth it and a lot better than an i3....

All the best Brett :)

Im going to pass on that AMD 1100T since i cant find it anywhere for under $200 and my budget is $130 for a cpu

You have a better upgrade path with the I3.

Here you go. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/186?vs=289 For the most part, the i3 is better.

Damn, rolli beat me to it, lol.

The i3 and and are roughly on par. The 970 will blow away any video editing however.

Personally the and would win out plus a cm 212 evo and overclock that bad boy

According to Tom's, the i3-2100 is better:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-o... ... and a good graphics card of course.

But from my own builds and testing, I not so sure. I've built several gaming PCs with i3-21xx processors. But I just finished this last build using a PhII X4 965BE. I always run a small suite of gaming benchmarks to present along with the sale offering. So far, every benchmark I've run shows the Phenom II X4 965BE to have a slight edge over even the i3-2120 in both the CPU ratings and the overall ratings. The rest of the systems' components are always about the same.

At 720p with that card, it won't make much difference. Either processor will do the job.

Im thinking of Phenom II X4 970 because of overclocking and I just got a good case ( i think) but upgrade path on i3 is alright (I would get an i5 2500 (no k) is 4 years lol

Gaming right now the I3 fights with the highly clocked Phenoms, I5 on the other hand has the upper hand on current phenoms and FX CPU's. Who knows for the popularity of the current I5's ebay might be full of them cheap in a couple of years.

If you are planning on going with an i5 soon after buying the i3, I'd say go for an Intel build. If you want the best gamer right now for the least amount of money, go with the AMD 970 build. But get an AM3+ board not a AM3 board for a bit of future-proofing.

There was a swedish site that showed the i3 struggling in online multiplayer BF3. A person on another site overclockers I believe compared the difference of his 2500k with 2 cores disable vs 4 cores and also found a solid difference between comfortably playable vs playable. Also similar question asked

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/336931-28-will-2100-b...

I'd go with the 970 personally since you mentioned BF3, if not the i3 would be a good decision nonetheless. Good Luck

You don't want to buy a 2500K in 4 years so upgradeability is out of the question in this thread. There'll be new, much more powerful processors out by then.

I might be inclined to agree in suggesting the AMD for this one.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 970 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($109.99 @ Newegg)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($22.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $212.97
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

Do you post this on every shopping thread?

I'm sure you know games barely benefit from 6 cores, and at a $60-100 (huge percentage) premium over the Phenom II X4s it's obvious it isn't worth the barely measurable improvements in gaming.

The CPU is simply a horrible value for gaming.

Don't get me wrong, I love it too, but not at it's price for games.

You don't need a cooler with the i3, in fact if you grab a B75 board you won't be able to overclock regardless of processor!

Imnot getting the cooler for the i3 and I know that you can't overclock it and I might not even get the 970 because of the 30 day warranty :o

In your case, I'd go with the 965BE + Asrock 970 Extreme3 motherboard + 8GB RAM + a good CPU cooler and overclock to 3.8 - 4.0Ghz, whatever feels stable/enough for you. :)

That 30 warranty on the 970 is because you are apparently looking at an OEM version. The Box version has the full warranty. But, in all the builds I've ever put together, I've never had a bad processor. Other components, yes. But never the processor. Personally, I wouldn't let the 30 day warranty be a deal breaker. You'll know real quick if you have a bad CPU. If it works on day one, you'll be fine.

It was already settled that he won't upgrade in four years, so that argument doesn't apply. Both the i3 and 970 are great choices though, and either will be fine.

Hi :)

Yes I run 1100Ts so I like them , but the reason I suggested them were twofold...

1, he wants to play BF3 on large multiplayer maps....

2, he was considering an i3

Take those two reasons together, and you should run an 1100T...

For around £30 more its a hell of a lot more cpu than a quad...

All the best Brett :)

Well, all I can say is those 2 cores the 970BE offers will definitely show in multiplayer games. Not even the clock/IPC advantage will overcome 2 full cores less.

Now, for around that same price, you could get an i5 2300. 4 cores, good performance and no slouch either without the power overhead from the 970BE. If you OC the 970BE, you'll use a lot of power. They're very hungry chips, mate.

And about upgrade paths... Both platforms are mostly equal in that department, so moot point to bring it up.

If you ask me, settle with an i5 2300 (or better, off course) and you can save on the aftermarket HSF from the 970BE for a while (the stock cooler won't let you OC that far). If you feel the CPU is getting short on your needs, you'll probably have to change the whole computer again anyway.

Cheers!

*shrug, if you believe 6 cores is going to make a $100 difference in BF3 coupled with a 6770 then okie. <3

^+1

If you can afford it, get something a bit faster than the 6770. It's a decent card but a 6870 is a much faster card, awesome for the price.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

$149 after rebate with free shipping and one of my favorite GPU manufactures (XFX). Awesome deal and unbeatable price per performance IMO.

This is with an overclocked 6770 (+50mhz core/memory)

~55-100% faster (more if you include overclocking headroom) in these tests for ~50% more cost.

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1673/13/

And for BF3...

Take note, the 5770 is virtually a rebranded 6770. (6770 using less power and having newer features, but similar in performance)

The 6870 is only $10 more, and is a little less than 25% faster in BF3.

Much worth the less than 7% premium (plus you'll get a lifetime warranty with XFX) IMO.
