Hi I was wondering if I should upgrade my CPU or my GPU

current specs

AMD Phenom x4 965 BE @3.4ghz
ASUS m4n98td-evo
4gb Kingston 1333
EVGA gtx470 @stock

I use my pc for gaming, mainly Battlefield 3 but at high graphics it goes anywhere between 40-75 fps when I want it at a constant 60 at least.
I was thinking should I upgrade my CPU to something like a 3570k which then means I need a new motherboard (don't have much $$$) OR should I sell the gtx470 and buy something like a gtx570 (pccasegear having a sale on a Zotac 570 for $299 AUD) or even 2 gtx550ti's and SLI them, seeing as my mobo supports SLI?

TL;DR

I want to increase performance from my pc, what parts should I upgrade or should I do some overclocking

THANKS

Get an aftermarket cooler (you'll need one to OC with a 3570K anyway) and OC the CPU first. If that doesn't cut it, then we can go on from there.

What AM cooler would you recommend?

bump your ram up to 8gb, make sure u keep ram in pairs so it stays dual channel, get a cm hyper 212+/evo clock the cpu up to around 4ghz and upgrade your gpu for bf3 something like a 7850 $269 http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=8936 msy is usually as cheap or cheaper than pccasegear and theyre everywhere, avoid sli unless you know what your getting yourself into

That sounds like a good plan, so there's no way to save my 470? I guess I'll sell it on ebay should almost pay for a 7850

The 470 is just fine. With a 3570K, it'd pretty much all you need. I'm just offering the cheapest and easiest solution first. No need to go out and spend a ton of money, when what you have may get you where you want to go with some OC'ing.

i like to sell my video cards every 18 months or so while they are worth something cos if you leave them much more they are worth nothing, you could put it on ebay sell it if you get the right offer and go from there. msy are good, i have never had a prob with them i dont like stuff getting posted to me i like to be able to drive to the place for warranty, not that i know how far pccasegear is from u. the 570's are good cards too just the 7850 is a bit cheaper, use alot less power/less heat. u could just get the 212 and see how u go but bf3 likes heaps of gpu

i like an intel as much as anyone i dont think he will get the same performance improvement in bf3 as he will by overclocking his current cpu and updating a gpu opposed to a complete platform change

I actually think it's the CPU holding him back here. Just my opinion. The 470 is still a strong card. Of course, if he OC'd the CPU AND got a better card, then that absolutely WOULD be better, but I don't think he needs to do that for what he wants to accomplish.

Ok so either way, I can start off by OC'ing my 965 after I buy the hyper 212 cooler. On a side note, should I use the BIOS for overclocking or programs like AMD overdrive?

Definitely the BIOS. I don't trust software OC'ing.

yeah the 470 still is an ok gpu but i have the same cpu as you i dont find any dif in bf3 between the stock 3.3 and 4.4ghz, im sure a heavily overclocked 965 will go close to a stock 2500k, and in alot of review the i3's dont hold back frame rates so in my opinion the gpu will be a bigger benefit. have a look at the benchies in toms for system builder marathons etc and make the choice for yourself i would use bios for overclocking

Any guides specifically for 965 be overclocking? I've looked on youtube but they're all pretty much useless and none of them show using BIOS

Ok this is a late as post but I don't want to start a new thread. I installed the hyper 212 evo today but I haven't begun the overclocking. the problem is that I'm not sure if there's a significant drop in temps. Im using Speedfan to monitor my temps and thers two readings for CPU one says 30C and one says 45C. If it is the 45C one that's hardly a huge decrease in temps running at idle is it? what temps should I be seeing this this cpu cooler?
