I understand it may not be optimal, but will it run?
also It only came with 2 SLI connectors and the cards call for 4. Am I safe using 2 6pins and 2 molex->6 pins.
The combined wattage on the 12v rails is 456w(38A) according to the power supply box.

ahtlon hmmm, what model is it?
Athlon are not good option for to sli gtx 460...it would make a bottleneck of your cards.

Model 640 OC'd to 3.5Ghz.

I realize that its budget and I am on a budget but the next thing I would upgrade would be CPU.

after checking it out on newegg that power supply only has a combined 38 Amps on 12v rail , I dont think that's sufficient (or safe) for dual 460s.

Have you tried overclocking the 460? Those things can be increased in performance by almost 30% , it's nuts

Yeah I did overclock it and got 15-20% more out of it but its still not near enough to play battlefield 3 on ultra.

this is what you should do for bf3 that I do for my 6850, put everything ultra, but turn shadows to high. At least for the single player it's fine, and literally no difference in picture. I have a 2500k tho, but even with 4xaa it was playable like this with high shadows and everything else ultra.

I couldnt tell the difference between High vs ultra shadows, there's really no point to spend money on another 460 with doubts whether or not it would work just to enable it...lol just enjoy the game.

Well the problem is after this current patch I can't even play the game with everything off/low at 60fps constant.
I was hoping to fix that with the gtx 460 SLI

well the 460 is definitely enough to play with everything off/low at 60fps, the problem lies elsewhere for sure. Try reinstalling or downloading newest nvidia drivers from their site. 460 SLI won't help you here since the GPU isn't the bottleneck at such low settings.

It was before the patch happened but now I'm seeing such low GPU usage its ridiculous.

I'm on 290.53 but I have changed it many times with the same results.

I wouldn't trust that cheap power supply with the money you have into your other components that it can destroy.
Although these are more expensive I would trust them.

Only difference is that the one is modular.

Bro you have low gpu usage = there is no bottleneck on the gtx 460, if you buy 2 gtx 580s it still wouldnt matter, your problem lies in a different component or if you're saying it was fine before then it's a software/driver/patch problem. Reinstall the game maybe or google it, im sure other people will have similar problems.

other people do have problems like it, I'm just not sure if it will ever get fixed as DICE is horrible at fixing stuff atm.
