"monitor going to sleep" in games

Windows 7, HP Pavilion Slimline tower, HP2009v flat monitor. Has been fine for a couple of years. Occassional "Monitor Going to Sleep" issues fairly randomly. Now, in games Sega Total War series it is almost garenteed to do a "Monitor Going to Sleep" after 5 mins of game play. Required reboot to clear. Tried most of the online suggested solutions with no effect (unless you call the situation getting worse an effect). No reply from HP which is frustrating. Any new solutions out there?

The monitor will probably go to sleep because there's no video signal and there's no video signal because your computer crashed. If it's monitor then you don't need to reboot the computer and also the monitor would go to sleep also when you're doing mundane tasks such as browsing the web.
