Vsync and pc help

hi i have a amd phonem 2 1090t cpu at 3.72 Ghz with a xfx 6870 gpu i use a 32 inch sony bravia tv with this computer i play most games on ultra i play dirt 3 on ultra with frame rates of around 100+ on ultra with 4x aas and no vsync at 8x aas i get 80 constantly and sometimes higher so i when i turn on vsync gets capped at 60 fps i was wondering is vsync good for my setup it seems to make the game more smoother my tv is running at 1216 704 i read somewhere you cant use 1080p because the tv requires fast refresh rates so i play games on 720 but sometimes a game looks fine in 1080p

vsync just makes it so you don't get any tearing effect on your screen from the vertical and horizontal not being "synched".
