What is the differents between pci lan and onboard lan

in my desktop getting on board lan problem. so am added pci lan card .internet and other thinks are working fine but what is the problem mean i have VPN secure connection but is not working on PCI lan card,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
what is the solution for this problem, plz give idea for working
