I'm in Bibb County Alabama. Cingular sold me GSM phones in October that did
not work; now I hear we have GSM; before I do this again; how do I find out
definitively. I don't trust salesmen.

I wouldn't count on that to be completely up to date at any time.

Not sure about cingular but t-mobile has nothing there. nada.

You can look for yourself at http://compass.t-mobile.com

(for anybody who's wondering if they have tmo coverage)

Does anyone else have a GSM phone there? Ask them if they have
problems with coverage. You may need roaming onto Voicestream
activated. On top of this either 850MHz or 1900MHz may not be
available (so you may need at least a dual band phone).
Cheers

You don't need to "activate" roaming. If it's there you can use it.
If however cingular covers that area it's unlikely that you'll be able
to use T-Mobile (news flash! It's been T-Mobile for three years now!)

The tmobile link is great and it's the same one they use in the store.

I currently have Verizon and Tmo. I have to admit that Verizon has
the better coverage by far, but Their employees are seriously rude and
incompetent.

I'm testing TMO AGAIN, but It's been less then 24 hrs and I've already
had one dropped call in the greater L.A. area off all places.

Not to mention the waiting time for the next available customer support rep

Update:

Cingular GSM works (barely along) HWY 82 in Brent/Centreville now. It goes
from 0-5 bars. I have never seen such swings so I took the plunge.
Apparently Cingular will lease coverage from Unicel who has the towers.
There are new towers built by Cingular that will be operated by Unicel and
should all be up by end of the year according to Cingular salesman. I have
a 30 day period during which I can return the phones.

Day 1 has not been promising. Unicel must be working on the tower though it
has calmed down tonight. I kept getting the message: welcome to Unicel;
your call cannot be completed. Please try again. That was when I got
anything at all. Since 9:15 this evening I have been able to make calls
pretty regularly. It seems once I get on the network, I haven't been
dropped.

More later...

Talked to Unicel salesman; tower is new and they are adjusting it; at times
it is very strong but it seems to fluctuate a lot and one gets the Welcome
to Unicel error message a lot. Is this because they haven't dedicated many
lines to it yet?
