I recently purchased a PNY 1 Gig SD card for my Coolpix E5100 and it worked
fine. I took the card in to Walmart to get some of the pictures developed
using one of their "picture maker" machines. The card was working perfectly
before using the machine, but when inserted in to the machine it couldn't
find any of the pictures. The employees at Walmart said that it was
probably because the pictures were stored in directories. However now the
camera won't accept the card, it keeps showing an error message "this card
cannot be used" and won't allow me to even format the card in the camera. I
have a card reader that is capable of reading and writing and used to read
the card fine, but now it doesn't want to recognize the card. Some times it
reads it fine sometimes it says "insert card" Even when the card is read in
the reader I can't format it because it says it is write protected
eventhough it's not locked. I should mention that I have never been able to
write or delete anything off this card using the card reader because it's
write protected, yet I can write and delete off a Compact Flash card with
the same reader no problem.

Any help would be welcomed. Thanks

The machines I've used seem to know to search directories. My guess is all
cameras would use directories although obviously I can only speak for the
cameras I have owned. Sounds like the card is screwed up, get in touch with
PNY for a possible exchange. If you're lucky they might be able to save the
pics.

Is the write-protect switch "On"?

I've tried it both ways, on and off. Doesn't make a difference.

You may have damaged the pins in the camera that go into the card, this
happened to me but fortunately it was under warranty so Nikon didn't charge
me. hth

This is interesting because, I recently went to Walmart (05/17/05) and
the Picture-Maker machine could not read my card. I have not been able
to write to the card from a PC after that. I even wondered if the
incident at Walmart was the problem (before reading this post). The
stange thing is my PalmPilot writes to the card with no problem.
