3-pin Fan Y connector

If I use a Y connector to connect two 3-pin case fans to my motherboard, will I be able to control the speed of both of them via the MB? I understand that I need to cut the wire on one of them or the MB will be confused by both signals, but will the MB only control the speed of the fan that still has the wire or both of them?

Since the Y connector means both fans are in parallel, any voltage change or PWM change will effect both fans. The board will see the 2 fans as one large fan. Just be sure both fans are identical.
