Hi i am getting battlefield 3 and right now i have a geforce gtx 430 that runs bfbc2 pretty well. I was thinking about a Radeon Hd 6770 would that be better?
My build:
Gigabyte M68MT Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE
Patriot 4GB DDR3 RAM
Seagate 1TB HDD
450W Power Supply

Any suggestions would be apprieciated!
(i have a limited budget so keep them under about 150 or so)

yes a 6770 would be a lot better and will run bf3 decently.

what model is the psu, you might be able to run a 6850 on it, which costs below $150 now.

Will unlocking my cpu to a b55 x4 make it able to run on high settings?

depends on your resolution, you'd have a good chance to run on high with a b55 x4 at 1600x900 or lower

I suggest waiting for the 7770 if possible. AMD should launch the 7950 and 7970 on the 9th. The following month you should see the 7800's launch and possible some in your price range. These cards will be faster but also the 6850 should go on sale once these new cards are launched. Waiting about 40 days would put in a much better buying position.

I won't see a point in waiting as the 6850 is already super cheap and probably will not see much difference in price with the new launch and since the prices of the new cards are high. A 6850 will also be the best you can use so no point in waiting.

How do you know there prices? The only know price is the 7970 for $550. Most retailers will try to clear older models before launch date.

if the 7970 is 550 then the price would all be higher as the 6970 is only 350 now...
they aren't changing the performance of their lineup...

That is why I said 40 days because the 7800's will launch a month later. There is speculation the 7850 will be as low as $199 and twice as fast as the 6850. Prices will then fall on the old models if true.

I would wait for the ATI HD 7k series too, it sounds like they will be killer vid cards.

I would think the 7850 would be priced at $200 with a 50% increase in performance like the 6970 to a 7970 which isn't really worth the wait.

So your going to second guess speculation by $1? Really doesn't matter as the 6950 1GB in that price range will have to change price downward. See the 6950 1GB cards will be pushed down to about $180 to sale them of which is currently the 6870's price range. The 6870 will be forced down and so on.

the 6870 is already 150 and the 6850 can be found for 130

and no it wasn't a second guessing of the price, its the fact that 50% increase is far from being twice as powerful...

it would put the 7850 at the level of the 6950 which currently is $230, which would be a really small drop in price once it scales down to the 6850 level.

Your missing the point of price range. It doesn't matter much if its $199 or $200 as its as powerful as the 6950 and newer. The 6950's price will have to shifted down. And no the average of the 6850's are around $150 on newegg. The cheapest 6870 is $159.99 and that isn't a card I would suggest. The quality 6870's are in the $180 price range.

so you'd wait 3 month to save $10 when you could be playing games you want today?

Nope again 40 days as its only about 10 days till the launch of the 7970. The 7970 launches on the 9th. Also its more than $10 as your counting the lowest against the average and better quality at that price.

wrong!
BF3 loves more cores.2 cores will struggle,4 will be fine, while 6 would be the best.
all 4 cores of my oc 980 are at 99% while playing bf3.

The 550 should perform a few FPS slower than the 6850 but I suggest waiting for 7800's to launch. This will force both AMD's old cards and Nvidia's near the price range down a far bit.

don't get the 550 ti, its basically nvidia trying to fool people as it is really crappy and not worth the price for something from AMD or even last gen nvidia.

the 6850 would probably be best and if the 7XXX are out you could check it with the price of the new cards and pick which ever one you'd like.

I also see a 6750 for like 75 dollars (with rebate) but would that perform as well as the 6850?

Not even close. the 6750 will surely reduce you to a low resolution for playable fps. It wouldn't break 30fps most of the time at 1080p. It also seem to only break 30fps at 1680X1050. I wouldn't suggest this card for BF3.

the only official comment on AMD`s website says a release date of jan 9 only for the 7970,release dates for all others would be who knows when.

no info on any other 7000 series release dates announced by AMD.

Read the tomshardware review of the 7970 as it stated the 7800 are expected the following month.

you'd be able to play on high with a 6770 at your resolution, maybe turning down to medium for multiplayer.

The 6770 is just a renamed 5770 as the performance is the same. It only adds some support for I cant remember exaclty. The 6770 should push nearly 40fps at high quality 1080p. This card shouldn't be greatly affected by any new card launch till after April. I would suggest this card.

For BF3 I would suggest the 6850 over the 6770 but this depends on how you fill about the price difference. If the 6850 is only $25 more in mid February get it for sure.

Sure the minimum requirements is an X2 2.7GHz, 2GB's of RAM, and 3870 or 8800GT. If you can set your monitor to 1280X1024 your 430 should allow you to play it. Possible some higher resolution with lower quality settings.

dont cheap out and get anything less then a 6850 you will regret it. dont expect to play on high with a 6770 or even a 6850(maybe) at 1080p in multiplayer. the gpu alone MIGHT be able to do it but the fact still remains that your cpu is lacking.
