ASUS EAH5770 issue

Hello,
I run Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and have an ASUS EAH5770 video card. The PC is about 18 months old now. Up until about a month or so ago I had no problems but recently I have been having regular issues where after the PC has been running for a while the screen will suddenly go a solid whitish colour (with pale veritical stripes) and the PC will freeze. I can then only restart it with the power button. I cannot see any particular messages in the Event Logs, so I am thinking it is probably a hardware issue with the card. Is there a way of checking it - maybe it is overheating? Use MSI Afterburner software and it indicated fan speed of 0% - 10% (could this be the issue maybe?).

Might be overheating yes, but could be a few different things. You need to get a temperature monitor utility like CPUID HWMonitor. That will tell you current/min/max temps. Run the utility and put the computer under load (like run a game or something) and watch the temps. Acceptable CPU/GPU temps vary but generally I get nervous when things go higher than 80c. Was that 0%-10% fan speed when the card was under load or idle? Your GPU fan may be failing or may have failed. They usually make noise for a bit until they die. Can you observe it actually spinning with the computer running?

Its always a good idea to open up your case once in a while and blow out all the dust using some canned air. Pay attention to the CPU and GPU heatsink fins - they need to be clear.

Hi larkspur, thanks for your reply and advice. I am now running CPUID HWMonitor and in general the temperatures of my CPU and GPU are well below 80C - CPU around 56 and GPU around 47C. The screen has gone solid colour twice today (once off-white with parallel vertical bars and once yellowish with the same veritical bars), but in both cases the PC was not under a particularly high load. The first time, I was watching a video, and the second time I'd just left the screen idle - not even using it, but when I came back the screen was solid yellow and had to reboot from the power switch again. The fan speed is set to min and max of 30% but is generally in the 0 - 10% range with very little load (other than browsing the Internet). I suspect it is not working as I could not feel anything from the video fan. However, the temperatures do not reflect overheating (at least nowhere near 80C). I have blown some area through the case - was a little dusty, but not overly so. My video card has 2 years warranty so I am thinking of getting the PC shop to check it out.

Thanks for your advice.

I believe the cables are firmly attached but will re-check them. I have rarely opened the case up, so they should be as per original installation.

Peter.
