I just installed a new AOpen 12x burner, and I can't get it to burn at a speed higher than 6x. I get an error in Nero saying "Illegal speed for this medium." I have tried another software program, and get a similar error. I have tried 4 different kinds of CD-R Media, all rated for 12x or faster, including the blank CD that came WITH the burner. I have also enabled DMA for the drive, and that didn't help either. There isn't a specific setting in my BIOS for adjusting the DMA for the IDE channel.
Here is my system:
Asus K7M Motherboard
AMD 750Mhz Processor
128 MB Ram
Maxtor 80GB Hard drive
SoundBlaster Live Value!
3Com NIC
ATI 32MB VIVO Card

Any suggestions?

Considering your problems, I suggest you return it for one that works, or buy a more reliable drive. The AOpen is GREAT if you get one that actually works properly.

I went through 3 drives before I got one that worked properly.

I recommend a lower-end Plextor. They're a little more expensive, but well worth the money.

I ordered a replacement AOpen 12x drive to see if my drive was faulty or if i was using incorrect settings, since the original drive worked, but not at speeds higher than 6x. I removed the old drive, swapped in the new one, and the new one worked without a problem. It was also much quieter than the original drive. So the original WAS DEFECTIVE. I hope this helps anyone else out there who has a similar problem with this drive.
