  1. Don't get a Phenom II - even the 960T and 970T are bested by the Pentium G620. I'm not a true Intel or AMD fanboy but Sandy Bridge is the way to go right now.

And if you're contemplating a 6950 - wait a couple weeks and get a 7870 - it's matching and in some cases beating the GTX 580, check it out: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-7870-review-benchmark,3148.html

Go with this setup - it will far outperform any AMD CPU right now:

    - Asrock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271
    - Intel Core i3-2120: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115077
    - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148544
    - Sapphire Radeon HD 7870: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1160&pid=1473&psn=&lid=1&leg=0

I don't know what the exact price on the 7870 will be but I'm guessing in the ~$270 range. Based on that estimate:

    Total: $562.80
  2. I looked up the 7880 and its actually going to be about 350$ so that way over my budget. Any other suggetions

    You mean the 7870?

Yeah the newer GPUs will come at a premium, maybe try this if you want to stay within your budget:
