There is only one hands on evaluation of a pre-production Nikon 55-200 lens
on the web.
There is no hard information on a release date for this lens.
More important: does anyone really know if Mitsubishi controls Nikon? Or is
it some unfathomable quasi-legal Japanese interlocking directorate thing?
Enquiring minds want to know . . .

Why would you expect to find reviews of pre-production lenses?
I know that Ken Rockwell has a review of it, and that he criticises it
for slow focusing. If this is correct, then it is a shame, as it means
that there still isn't a small fast sharp zoom telephoto Nikkor, apart
from the practically unobtainable second-hand 70-210 D.

70-210 f/4-5.6 D ? or f/4 D ?
eBAY australia has a few .. I sold one a few weeks back.
I don't think they are any faster than the 55-200mm to be.

The F4 is quite old and big - I didn't think that there was a D version.
70-210 f4-5.6 D is very fast compared to the others. Reason is that it
is only about 6 rotations of the focus screw gear from infinity to 4
feet. (Non-D is about 12) On a D70, that will focus from 4 feet to
infinity in about 0.5 second. That is quick. No doubt even faster on a
pro body, but slower on a consumer 35mm body. You can get US$400 or
more for good ones on Ebay USA.
