Help! Network messed up on Win 7 SP1

On Gateway DX4300-03 running Win 7SP1 64-bit Home Premium cannot connect to home network -- lists the connection as unidentified public network, a complete change since installing SP1. I cannot change it back to what it is supposed to be. In Network and Sharing center, I have tried to set up a new network, connect to a network, and manually connect....unsuccessful on all counts. What am I doing wrong and can somebody pleeeeeeez help.

I am at the whining stage now.

go you have internet access?

is the workgroup name the same then the rest of the network?

yes. In "Set Network Properties" box, it won't allow any typing in the area of network name-- the "unidentified network" shows highlighted in blue, but i can't backspace to delete the name so I can type in the proper name of the network.
