HP Officejet 6500 wired ethernet fails

HP Officejet 6000 wire ethernet set up always fails at end of set-up script. HP forum was useless. PC is running Win XP, router is Netgear WGR 614. Router shows printer as attached device. Printer connects OK with USB

If you are using the driver disc try downloading the latest driver from HP.

I tried using latest installation software from HP - same result. Did HP support online chat and installed the printer as a local printer on LPT1 and then changed port to Standard TCP/IP port using IP address assigned during failed installation.
