Need advice on choosing between Intel or AMD

Hello,

I am planning to build a pc sometime in August and doing some search on what kind of processor to buy. I had initially decided on config i5-3570k, asus z77-m-pro, hd 7770 graphics. The total cost came to about $1300 (including monitor, case, PSU,HDD).

Later i saw AMD APU (A8-3870k). If i choose AMD APU with similar spec (A8-3870, Asus mobo, HD6670 ) cost dropped to about $800.

I need a pc mainly for development stuff like using Visual studio, Android development , using mac os x snow leopard on virtual box/ vmware, dual boot ubuntu and some light gaming (BF3, Dirt3, COD,NFS).

If i go for AMD APU, can APU perform necessary development work mentioned above.

More about need advice choosing intel
  1. better stay away from the APU coz the socket FM1 is dead. The 3870k is the fastest chip u can put in, and the chip isn't particularly fast when compared to that i5:)

Best option for u is to go with the i5, incase money is an issue, try getting a i5-2300 or maybe even an i3-2120 :)

Thanks.. I did not know FM1 socket is going to be phased out. I thought if i could save some money (400-500) , i can buy things like SSD, better case...
  3. confirming phase out for fm1, its the end of the line for it. amd trinity will be using fm2 mobos.
  4. I was looking forward for trinity line of APU but i think it will not be released before October / November.
  5. the new Trinity APUs are out now and they are quite good. unfortunately they are only shipping to OEMs so all you can get right now is llano and fm1.

Will you overclock that Intel K processor? if not a dual core i3-2120 might meet your needs and save some cash. not sure though the quad might be good for your multi tasking.

What else did you drop to get to 800? just switching boards and CPUs wouldn't save $500. did you remember the windows license ($100) if you don't have it.

you might want to throw a post up in the new build section with the template

as soon as you said you were using the 7770 as gpu and not builtin they are not even on the same page 3570 is so much better than anything amd full stop

i dont think i will overclock the intel k processor , when i buy but in future i probably will.

The price drop is due to conversion factor , i am buying these parts in india, i5 - 3570k processor alone cost around INR 18,000 or equal to $400 whereas amd a8 -3870 cost around INR 6000 equal to $150. Similar is for the mobo and GPU.

I am quite aware that i5-3570k is much better than a8-3870k,but if AMD APU can do the tasks i require , i thought its good to save the money and buy something else.

Now that i know FM1 socket is going to be phased out, i probably will stick to i5 3570k. Hope trinity will launch before september.

ouch. yea. that hurts. they're $120 and $220 here. higher prices i get but that much bigger gap seems weird. looks Intel or someone is doing some price gouging
  10. looking online at new egg and your local micro center helps. there are combo deals on both sites right now micro center flyer that online there running combo on the ib chips and mb. there also combo deals on amd chips and mb too.
look online there a lot of reviews on toms and here of the intel i3/i5 vs amd cpu.. if you went with one of the newer amd chips they do have a better gpu then the intel cpu. so there better for light gaming.

went with the b7x chipset and non overclocked mb to save you some cash so you could toss in a ssd.
if you need cheaper the i3-2100 (two core cpu) 109.00
g850 that less then the i3. (still two core).

nope, its cause the INR has fallen very badly against the dollar....

    Jan 2012 -> 1USD = INR 52
Today its fallen to an all time new record low of INR 57!!! So basically we gotta pay 10% more for all imported stuff (we buy in USD), as compared to prices back in Jan. Really Sucks!!:(
Luckily when i purchased my system, the dollar was selling for only INR 42 :D

@skumarm226[/b[ If possible delay buying by a few months.....by that time the Trinity shud reach here, as well as the rupee cud possibly recover:)

@smorizio Dude he stays in india :)
