Will 1GB suffice for play/edit/burn DVDs/upload full HD 1080p videos

I need help in deciding between these 2 video cards:

NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 550M 1GB graphics with Optimus
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics with Optimus

I would like to know if the 550M 1GB GPU will be enough for me to be able to play/edit/burn DVDs/upload full HD 1080p videos coming from the new GoPro Hero2 and the new Panasonic HDC-TM900 video cameras. I've read somewhere that GPUs need to be powerful enough to utilize more than 1 GB. Also, I read that the 555M 3GB is only a marketing ploy for those who think that higher specs will make a difference, but in truth the 555M is not powerful enough to utilize the 3GB. Are those statements true? Would I be fine with just the 550M 1GB GPU for the tasks I'm asking and the specific video cameras I mentioned?

Thanks in advance.

  1. You only need the 1GB card. more than 1GB is only needed when you have a screen resolution of 1920x1080 or above. And since this a laptop you are well under that. Even if you had a big screen that card would die trying to render it.

    Edit:

NVM I skipped over what you were wanting to do with it. I just assumed gaming. Silly me.
  2. let me get this straight .. what your asking really dosnt apply to the gpu performance unless your looking at using hardware accelerated encoding .. but that really only applys to mp4 and mpg and dv... as far as encoding dvds you should look into cuda based apps that take advantage of cuda cores .. which would be part of your gt 550m considering this would be a laptop part .. you should also consider having at least 4 to 8 GBs of ram with that in mind you would need windows 7 professional 64bit eddition or at least home premium to have more than 4 gbs of ram .. the 32bit version cannot address more than 4 gbs .. but it sounds to me like that would be more then enough .. 3gb would be better for hd at 1080p however the 1gb version will also work.
  3. Most of the work done while editing will be done on the CPU.... In my build, while working in Adobe After Effects, the CPU maxxes out while the GPUs do ahrdly anythin while editing/rendering...
  4. The rest of the laptop specs matters. You can play/edit/burn full hd with the intel integrated with the rest of the specs capable.
  5. Just get NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 550M 1GB graphics with Optimus. Or get one with equivalent Radeon Graphic cards when you don't want optimus...

  7. Should be good, Integrated HD 3000 with that processor will even be enough for playing/editing/burning/uploading. Having GT 550M will boost.
  8. Yes that's fine.
