my son and I are going to do uor first budget computer build. The components we will be using are. We already have a 1tb hdd

Your budget is? CM is terrible PSU maker. Get a Corsair, XFX or Seasonic PSU.

What's the goal here? Are you going for gaming or just for general use?
^That PSU, or even Corsair's CX430, would be good.

well general use mostly. Internet some watching dvds, dvd ripping, burning, converting dvd to avi. word prossesing and power point.

The 430's definitely fine, then: no need to leave room for a powerful graphics card.
