planning on upgrading my gpu and was wondering if i should get the 6970 (about 350) or 7970 (about 540).
does anyone know if you will be able to use, say an 8800 gt (with the driver hack) with a 7970 so you can have the physx?

Well, I don't know about the 7970. But I do have a couple of 6970's and would not dream of tinkering around with unofficial drivers.

If I was you, I would go with the 7970 and be happy you got it. Throw that 8800 out the window.

If PhysX is that big of a deal, I recommend going with a 580 3GB (if you can spend $550 on a GPU, you can afford this) and using the 8800GT as a PhysX card - would probably be better than a 7970 and a 8800 with cruddy basement drivers. At least in the long run.

You don't hack the 7970s driver, you hack the 8800GTs driver. (or you use that one they forgot to check for AMD cards) As long as you use XP/Win7 and play physX games then your good.

That's the kicker however. There are few games out there that can use a GPU for its PhysX. If you play any of them then by all means do this. But if you just play Crysis and MW3 then its not going to help you at all.

LoL how can people not know about the driver hacks for Nvidia, you only install community hacks for the Nvidia drives that allow the use of a dedicated physx card (nvidia gpu) such as a 8800gt. The best single slot cards without a power connector for dedicated physx is the 9800gt eco/green edition and the gts 450 eco. For single slot with 6 pin power connector are the 8800/9800gt and single slot gts 450. There are very limited but do exist single slot gtx260/460 but they are rare.

I didn't say the 7970 was what gets hacked.

The problem isn't AMD doesn't allow it, the problem is Nvidia doesn't allow it.

"...would probably be better than a 7970 and a 8800 with cruddy basement drivers..."

That was what I said. Sorry for not being more clear.

I do appreciate you trying to help, though. :)
